While
these coins are well circulated, and will have some defects,
all have dates, and no holes are present. This unusual denomination was authorized
in 1864, towards the end of the War Between the States. The Two-Cent Piece is the first U. S. coin to bear
the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST."

were three cents in 1851 when the series first appeared.
The Silver
Three-Cent Piece is the lightest of all U. S. coins. The coins were easily lost, and were not popular with the general public.

"V" nickel because of the Roman numeral "V" (Latin symbol for 5) on the back. The first issues omitted the word
"CENTS." Crooks gold plated the nickels
and passed them off as $5 gold pieces. The Mint caught on quickly, and the word "CENTS"
was added.
